Anime Series Review: Kaiba
June 13, 2019 § Leave a comment
The transhumanist space opera where memories have been digitized and your self can be placed into different bodies that also happens to be a terrifying dystopia where poor folks are vulnerable to theft and made to sell their bodies and memories to the rich, an amnesiac sets off on a dangerous interplanetary journey to find themselves.

I realized that this is my last chance to put out an episode in 2017, so here’s my top 5. I’ve done my best to keep these spoiler free.
The first 10 minutes or so are honorable mentions:

The last 20 minutes or so are my top 5.
5. Yuri!! on Ice

I got one of my twitter buddies, Animated Ink who has their own show, Oldtaku no Radio (which is also pretty good) on as a guest to review the ghost waifu series, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia.
The amount of nerd-ing happening is really high. We spoil the series at about 18 minutes, give or take. I think they stop after like 2 minutes or something, but you know how it goes here.

There’s a lot of politicking in this episode. I suppose that’s not unique to this one!
Ironically I imagine Bernie Sanders would probably love this show, since it resonates with his whole “young, capable people being proactive in politics” appeal.

Naruto Shippuden: Ninshu’s Cruel Optimism
June 16, 2016 § Leave a comment
I saw the latest two episodes of Naruto and really wanted to talk about Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths and what I thought about his story and the story of Ninja-kind.
In season 1, the first adventure that Naruto goes on is protecting a bridge builder, who wants to build a bridge to allow his town to have economic independence from a greedy mafia-type – which, in many ways, mirrors the story of Hagoromo and the thief in the recent episodes of Naruto.

I talk about one of the coolest characters in all of Gundam, Mineva Lao Zabi, or as I keep calling her, Audrey Burne.
One thing I didn’t talk about is the director’s comment that she would’ve been made moe if the series didn’t sell. Her presence would be mediated by sales, which is still scary. The hierarchical structure of man-over-woman is, despite a nice image of Audrey, still in place.

I review the two live-action films based on the Parasyte story, directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Both are pretty damn good and filled with interesting lighting, imagery and while a little bit fast paced, well-put together.
Especially in comparison to the other bad Japanese live-actions I’ve seen. That said, it’s not a masterpiece, more like the first Avengers, a film that is as good as it needed to be.

This episode is a lot more positive and joyful than I thought it would be. It is episode 100, so I decided that I should review something meaningful, so I reviewed Hanazawa Kengo’s first manga, Ressentiment.
This is one of the few manga that I’ve read from start to finish, and re-reading it has been a joy.
Especially now that I have a few more years under my belt, and I understand what satire is.
I remember Cardeas Vist’s earnest prayer in Gundam Unicorn.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Episode 14: Liberation of the Frontiers
December 1, 2015 § Leave a comment
In this episode, we learn why Scorched Earth tactics violate human rights, but that said all of this is over contested territories between two different systems of coercion. I mean, the romanticism of frontier life is the libidinal economy of colonialism, but whatever. lol. A lot of us dream of a better life and I’m equally as guilty (if we could even say that dreaming is a sin… but our dreams should be bigger than having a wife and kids on our own planet…)

I talk about some comments in this episode. I don’t think this episode was up to par.
It was strange because when I first watched this episode a few weeks ago it was a lot more interesting, but on this watch-through it was kind of meh, even though I do think this episode’s set-up is kind of funny, although it’s mostly a woman’s jealousy gets exploited by another noble who hates Reinhardt.

Split-screen in Anime Part 1
September 7, 2015 § 1 Comment
I figured there’s going to be a point where I will want to talk about split-screen in anime again, so I’m using the ‘part’ in the names so that I can do another episode like this if I felt like it.
Here is the “what” use of split-screen I was referring to in GATE.
Like, these characters aren’t even separated in space, they’re in the same confined screen space and it just doesn’t make sense to use it here.
This looks hilarious.
Here is the good use of split-screen I referenced in Ore Monogatari.

This episode (of the anime) is pretty funny, I was giggling throughout a lot of it given the seriousness of the music and the laid-back attitude that Yang Wen-li had in the face of a suicide mission.
I also noticed there’s a strange mechanical sound at the beginning of the episode, that’s my refrigerator, I didn’t feel like re-recording so the sound is still in there. My bad.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Episode 3: Birth of the 13th Fleet
April 23, 2015 § 2 Comments
Here’s another installment in our episode-to-episode coverage of the SF anime classic, Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
I really do like how small both Jessica Edwards and Secretary of Defense Truniht are, the enormous stage adds to that overwhelming sense of producing, via imaginative and physical labor, the monolithic idea of the nation-state with no actual referent other than the small people who work with and confront each other.
This image is also pretty gloomy, because it is the second to last shot of the episode before the credits roll. Yang Wen Li becomes the sort of reluctant hero, not just out of survivors guilt but because the category of hero is part of the state propaganda machine that is used by those in charge to get Yang to do what they want him to do, to either die or to do something heroic to increase their popularity.
